Afghanistan Today, a GWOT Hotspot (The Afghanistan Scandal?) 9-5-14 Fri. (118 days to go)

118 days to go for US troops in Afghanistan, or thereabouts. See the link #1 about all the riches Afghanistan has. Time to bring US troops home, and our money with them. The US can no longer afford to fund the Afghan military, we need to fund our own military and our American veterans.

Remember, a good read for this weekend would be the newly released book about Marines in Afghanistan and the restricted rules of engagement they endured, “LEVEL ZERO HEROES”. I just finished this book and give it my highest recommendation.

Time to have a huge investigation or tribunal after end of this war on 31 December 2014, and hold accountable those politicians and military officers responsible for the losing counterinsurgency theory that led to massive US casualties throughout the 13 or so years of war that we have been in Afghanistan since 2001.

Let’s make sure these officers, and the various losing war plans and strategies are NEVER used in war again! We have already had one Vietnam, why did we use the “Vietnam Plan for Afghanistan?”

In future wars, the US military motto should be: “VICTORY THROUGH STRENGTH.”

With 131 days to go for US troops in Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, and until the stoppage or slowdown in daily posts on this blog, and with all the global terror going on outside of Afghanistan, I decided to make a somewhat subtle, but I think necessary, change to the title of this blog. The change appears beginning with today’s title, and unless I forget and accidentally post it as I did in the past out of habit, the change will be to “A GWOT Hotspot” from “The GWOT Hotspot”. Right now, it even seems the switch is back on to Iraq, with Commander-in-Chief, President Obama, sending troops there on the ground, and also by air with air strikes. Some days 31 December 2014 seems a long way off, but it can’t come soon enough for US troops in this still dangerous country, who face death and injury while completing retrograde operations, closing bases and packing up US equipment.

195 days to go for US troops in Afghanistan. Let’s hope and pray the US Congress steps up and does not give in to the desire of President Obama to stay two more years until 2016! Staying until 12/31/14 is long enough!

1.) I did not see the hearing yesterday, but this story states that a soldier who served with Bowe Bergdahl said Bergdahl did not support the COIN theory (nation building, tea drinking missions) which was so popular with successive US generals leading the mission: McKiernan, McChrystal, and Petraeus, among others. This soldier states that Bergdahl wanted to fight and kill the Taliban. That sounds like a good plan if you ask me: stop the nation building, defeat the enemy, win the war and leave Afghanistan! Another day in the books, and 231 days left for US troops in Afghanistan.

Actions from 2007 were remembered yesterday in a Medal of Honor Ceremony at the White House with President Obama. The actions occurred under the Bush watch. One of those killed that day in 2007 was Parker, Kansas native, Army Sgt. Jeff Mersman. Never forget. I also wonder if one day, the political and military leadership of the US will be held accountable for putting US troops in these situations with restricted rules of engagement, COIN (nation building), etc. where they walk into villages to talk to Afghan elders, only to be ambushed, and many wounded and killed? 260 days to go or thereabouts for US troops in Afghanistan.

Another tax day finds US troops still in Afghanistan, but if it’s any comfort, it is their last tax day there as all US troops are set to withdrawal by 31 December 2014. God bless American troops still in Afghanistan and may they complete retrograde operations, closing bases and packing equipment and return home before 31 December 2014 if they have it all packed up.

In the meantime, it seems, fallout from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan continue, with various books and movies coming out. I had to question one report of Brad Pitt playing Gen. Stan McChrystal in a movie? Is this a joke or a Duffel Blog story? If he was a winning general, one who won the war in Afghanistan that might be one thing, but pursuing a failed COIN (counter-insurgency, nation building) theory which did not lead to victory, not sure I want to see that movie.

2.) Brad Pitt to play Gen. Stan McChrystal in a movie, at least that is what this report says. Surely this is a joke or a Duffel Blog story?

360 days to go for US troops in Afghanistan. God bless American troops still in Afghanistan as they complete retrograde operations, closing US bases and packing up and/or destroying equipment. Some equipment is too costly to ship back I have read in reports, so it is destroyed in Afghanistan and sold for scrap. It is still a danger zone, recently retaining its place on the list of countries where US troops earn imminent danger pay, which was reported to be $7.50 a day. Links from around the GWOT:

1.)  While US troops are in retrograde operations in Afghanistan, one of the reasons for the $7.50 a day imminent danger is revealed here: Afghans set to release 88 dangerous prisoners despite US concern for the safety of our troops. Link:

2.) The Washington Post reports (asks): “How hard is it to win hearts and minds in Afghanistan? Very hard.” With our Command College, and military academies for the Navy, Army, and Air Force, why was the COIN doctrine (nation building) even considered for Afghanistan when there was plenty of history to study on previous ventures in Afghanistan: British 3 wars in the 1800’s-early 1900’s involvement, Soviet Union involvement, “The Great Game” between the British and Russians, etc.?
