353 days to go for US troops in Afghanistan. God bless them as they complete retrograde operations, packing equipment and closing US bases in a still dangerous combat zone.

While we are packing up to leave Afghanistan by 31 Dec. 2014, the #1 movie in America is “Lone Survivor”, the story of a battle in Afghanistan in 2005.

Another Christmas in Afghanistan, pray for American troops in this war zone. Retrograde operations continue, but it is a still dangerous war zone. The US Embassy was attacked this Christmas Day. Merry Christmas to U.S. troops around the world, serving at U.S. Embassies worldwide. Links from around the GWOT:

As US troops continue in their retrograde operations, fallout from past scandals in Afghanistan abounds. See the link at #1 for details on the botched award process for military medals, and the loss of former Army Captain Will Swenson’s Medal of Honor recommendations. Continue to pray for US troops and that they will all be out of Afghanistan by the deadline already set, without an extension, on 31 December 2014. Links from around the GWOT:

Today the Medal of Honor will be awarded to former Army Captain Will Swenson at the White House for heroic actions in an ambush in Ganjgal Afghanistan on 8 September 2009.

While the US is in retrograde operations in Afghanistan, preparing for the 31 December 2014 departure, many US troops are being injured and dying.  See link #1 for a heroic Army Ranger giving a salute from his hospital bed while his commander awards him the Purple Heart. He was injured the weekend before last in an ambush which killed four American soldiers including a female Army nurse, and injured 30 Rangers total.

Four years have passed since Operation Dancing Goat II in Ganjgal, Afghanistan where three American Marines and a Navy Corpsman died in an ambush after being denied back up or air support. One Medal of Honor was awarded to Marine Sgt. Dakota Meyer for his actions that day. It was announced Monday of this week that a second Medal of Honor will be awarded, this time to former Army Captain Will Swenson. Swenson’s paperwork was “lost” on 2 or 3 occasions, but now has been found. The ceremony will be October 15, 2013. The story at link #1 describes the Battlescape that day back on 8 Sept. 2009 when the ambush occurred and Swenson’s heroic actions took place. Links from around the GWOT:

A Sunday of freedom in the US where Americans can attend the church of their choice. Remember US troops around the world in your prayers.

Link #1 is a story of true heroism by an enlisted soldier on the ground in Afghanistan in 2009. But, there must be accountability by the officers and higher ups who put these soldiers in such a poor position.
