Afghanistan Today, the GWOT Hotspot (The Afghanistan Scandal?) 4-11-14 (264 days to go)
264 days to go for US troops in Afghanistan.
In the meantime, the Sgt. Major of the Marine Corps, the top enlisted Marine who is supposed to be watching out for enlisted Marines, goes against them it seems, saying cutting their benefits and pay will increase their discipline. I don’t know how he could slap Marines and their families in the face like this. He should lead by example and be the first one to have his benefits, pay, and retirement cut.
Links from around the GWOT:
1.) Sgt. Major of the Marine Corps Mike Barrett backtracks on his comments to the Senate Armed Forces Committee on benefits, saying if Marine pay is cut it will increase their discipline. Read his response o the backlash here, as Marines and their families take it to the social media. I had a telephone town hall call yesterday with my Senator Pat Roberts, a former Marine. I asked about Barrett’s comments, and he said he knows the Sgt. Major and would talk to him today about it. I do not believe it is right for the Sgt. Major to make comments like this, and he and Commandant Amos need to walk it back. American taxpayers are funding Afghan troops and equipment, they should face cuts before US troops have their pay and benefits cut, especially our enlisted troops. Sgt. Barrett and Commandant Amos should step forward and turn down further pay, benefits, and health care first before and see if the discipline improves before testing it on lower ranking enlisted Marines. They should lead by example and give up their retirement and other pay and benefits.Link:
